TATAMI/MAT RULES

  • Be on time to class.
  • Greet the black belts upon entering the mat.
  • Use respectful language and behavior, especially around minors.
  • No curse/swear words allowed at the academy.
  • Listen carefully and quietly to all instructions in or outside the mat.
  • Make sure you take your shoes off before entering the mat.
  • Put shoes on immediately upon exiting the mat. This holds true even if you’re just going to the bathroom.
  • Keep fingernails and toenails clipped.
  • Refrain from chatting while the instructor is talking.
  • No food or gum on the mat.
  • Take care of your training partners. They are a big part of your success.
  • When the instructor assigns a task, continue doing that task until the instructor says otherwise.
  • Do not remove Gi tops or rash guards in the mat and lobby area.
  • Treat everyone with respect. That is, treat everyone the way you want to be treated.

Be open-minded to learn.
Strengthen your weaknesses.
Don’t let your ego get you hurt.
If you lose, try again.
If you win, stay humble and show respect to your partner.
