
TATAMI/MAT RULES
- Be on time to class.
- Greet the black belts upon entering the mat.
- Use respectful language and behavior, especially around minors.
- No curse/swear words allowed at the academy.
- Listen carefully and quietly to all instructions in or outside the mat.
- Make sure you take your shoes off before entering the mat.
- Put shoes on immediately upon exiting the mat. This holds true even if you’re just going to the bathroom.
- Keep fingernails and toenails clipped.
- Refrain from chatting while the instructor is talking.
- No food or gum on the mat.
- Take care of your training partners. They are a big part of your success.
- When the instructor assigns a task, continue doing that task until the instructor says otherwise.
- Do not remove Gi tops or rash guards in the mat and lobby area.
- Treat everyone with respect. That is, treat everyone the way you want to be treated.
Be open-minded to learn.
Strengthen your weaknesses.
Don’t let your ego get you hurt.
If you lose, try again.
If you win, stay humble and show respect to your partner.
